Baggage Regulations

Restrictions apply to baggage on all airlines. If you have baggage that is in excess of the free allowance, you will be liable for charges.

Any baggage exceeding 70 lbs/32 kgs in weight or 8.2 ft/98 in/250 cm cannot be accepted as checked baggage.  These items will need to be shipped as air cargo and arrangements must be made in advance through a freight forwarder.

For the comfort and safety of all passengers it is necessary to limit the size and weight of your carry-on baggage.

Your free checked and carry-on baggage allowances on Air Tahiti Nui operated flights are detailed below.

Be sure to label baggage inside and out, and with your name, address and contact number for your destination. Labels can be obtained from Air Tahiti Nui, your local travel agent or at check-in.

Carry-on Baggage


In compliance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority Regulations, it is necessary to limit the size; weight and number of each customers carry-on baggage.

* In addition to your maximum allowance, you may carry one (1) additional personal item in the cabin weighing not more than 3kgs (Exception: A Bridal Dress weighing not more than 5kgs and 140cm long is permitted). Approved personal items include: Handbag or pocket book, Small camera case or binoculars, Infant bag or baby food, Briefcase or laptop computer with case. Telescopic Fishing Rod less than 115cms and less than 5kgs. (Additionally, assistive devices such as walking sticks, canes or crutches are also permitted to be carried, provided they can be safely stored on board). There is no special allowance for infants. .

  • Any piece that weighs over 70 lbs / 32 kg, or exceeds 200 cm/79 in will not be accepted as checked baggage, and must be shipped as AIR FREIGHT arranged through a Freight Forwarder.
  • A MAXIMUM total of 4 pieces per passenger allowed.

*** Government and labor regulations limit the maximum weight per piece to 70 pounds / 32 kilos for safety reasons.



The following policy applies to special items that may not conform to the maximum permitted size/dimensions:

Allowed free of charge, IN ADDITION TO the free allowance. No limit in terms of number, weight or size.



One (1) bag allowed free of charge, IN ADDITION TO the published free allowance if;

  1. It is presented for carriage in a single appropriate & secure package
  2. It only includes golf, surf or diving equipment
  3. It does not exceed 23kg maximum weight and 250cm (98 inches) maximum length
  4. In all cases the second and any subsequent items of sporting equipment are subject to published Excess Baggage Charges (Extra Piece/Oversize and/or over weight as applicable)


One (1) piece is allowed free of charge in addition to the free allowance, provided it is no longer than 2 meters and a maximum weight of 5kg's, including the container.

Connecting with Other Airlines

If you have a connecting flight with another airline, and it is ticketed on the same ticket as your Air Tahiti Nui flight, then your baggage may be able to be through-checked if; Air Tahiti Nui has a baggage agreement with the other airline and depending on the systems available at the airport. Please check with your Air Tahiti Nui office for details.

When separate Air Tahiti Nui tickets have been purchased, or where the through-checking of baggage is not available between Air Tahiti Nui and the other airline, and in order avoid the inconvenience and costs of a missed flight, please ensure that enough time is allowed between flights to enable; the collection of baggage, clearance of immigration and customs, and check-in for the onward flight, as well as allow for any potential delays.

Packing Tips


Tips on Avoiding Baggage Problems

Relatively few bags are damaged or lost. However, your chances of encountering this experience can be reduced even further if you follow the advice set out below.


Avoid putting the following in checked baggage:

  • Valuables (cash, jewelry). Don't rely on suitcase locks; they are easily defeated.
  • Critical items (medicine, keys, passport, tour vouchers, business papers).
  • Irreplaceable items (manuscript, heirlooms).
  • Fragile items (camera, eyeglasses, glass containers). If these must be checked, wrap them carefully in padding.
  • Perishables.
Carry the above items either:
  • on your person, or
  • in a small bag that you carry on board.
Even if a bag is not lost, it may be delayed for a day or two. It is wise to put items that you will need during the first 24 hours in a carry-on bag (toiletries, one change of underwear).

Don't overpack checked bags. This puts pressure on the latches, making it easier for them to spring open.

Your checked bags may need to be opened for a security inspection out of your presence. If you wish to lock your bags, see for information on locks that security personnel can open and then re-lock. If you use an unapproved lock and your bag is selected for inspection, the security staff will break the lock if necessary.

Put a tag on the outside of your baggage with your name, home address, and home and work phone numbers. The airlines provide free stick-on tags. Most carriers also have "privacy tags" which conceal this information from passersby.

Put the same information inside each bag, and add an address and telephone number where you can be reached at your destination city.

Carry-on baggage advice:
  • Check with the airline for any limits it has on the size, weight, or number of carry-on bags. (There is no single federal standard.)
  • Inquire about your flight; different airplanes can have different limits.
  • If you are using more than one airline for a trip, check on all of them.
  • A heavy bag which fits in an overhead bin may still cause the bin to exceed its weight limit.
  • Don't assume that the flight has unlimited closet space for garment bags; some may have to be checked.
  • Don't pack anything in a carry-on bag that could be considered a weapon (e.g., scissors, knife).

Liability and Liability Exclusions

Regulations according to the Montreal Convention:
Air Tahiti Nui's liability for damage, destruction, loss or partial loss and for late delivery of baggage is limited to a maximum of 1.000 Special Drawing Rights SDR (approx. 1.220 EUR) per journey and traveler.

Notification periods:

A loss or damage should be reported immediately at the airport. However, a retroactive written notification is also possible.

Please observe the following notification periods:

  • Damage and partial loss: within 7 days after baggage delivery
  • Total loss: within 2 years
  • Replacement purchases in case of delayed baggage delivery: within 21 days after baggage delivery
  • The postmark or the automatic date of receipt in case of fax or email is decisive for the observance of notification periods

We recommend that you take out a private baggage insurance.

Baggage Liability Restrictions:

Maximum liability is not automatic - damage or loss value must be proven Air Tahiti Nui does not assume liability for unsuitably packed items Air Tahiti Nui does not assume liability for loss, damage or delay of baggage that may result from a security search conducted by any local, state, or federal agency Written notification will be placed inside your luggage or a seal may be placed on the outside of your luggage, if the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) made a random search of your bag. Contact them at 1-866-289-9673 if you feel they damaged your bag during a random inspection.

Normal Wear and Tear:

In the course of normal handling during travel, your luggage may show evidence of wear and tear. Additionally, the automated systems used by airlines may sometimes accidentally scratch or cause minor cuts to your baggage during handling. Baggage is designed to protect the contents. Scratches, nicks or dirt may appear despite care in handling. Like most airlines, Air Tahiti Nui does not accept liability from normal wear and tear damage to checked luggage such as:

  • Damage to or loss of protruding baggage parts such as straps, pockets, pull handles, hanger hooks, wheels and feet or other items attached to the baggage
  • Broken wheels or feet
  • Lost pull straps
  • Minor cuts and scratches
  • Damage resulting from over packing
  • Damage to retractable luggage handles
  • Fragile or perishable items damaged during transport
  • Items unsuitably packed or unsuitable for transportation
  • Damage resulting from Transportation Security Administration (TSA) inspections



US baggage security measures
Since 1 January 2003, new guidelines for checked baggage when traveling to/from the USA have been in place at all US commercial airports. Once your bags are screened, you will not have further access to them. Please remove everything that you want to take on the plane before you hand over your UNLOCKED checked bag for screening.

All bags must be left UNLOCKED to facilitate the search process. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will not be liable for any damage caused to locked bags they open as part of the screening process.

Any claims for damages caused to baggage or loss of items that has occurred during the screening must be handled through your own travel insurance policy. Please visit the TSA website for more details.

Security Checks
Thorough security checks are carried out at all airports that Air Tahiti Nui operates from. In these checks, local authorities will confiscate items of potential danger to the aircraft or its passengers, eg pocket knives, scissors, and any bladed or sharp items. Sharp Objects or cutting implements include but are not limited to: any knife, including paper knives, carpet knives, box cutters, letter openers, tradesman's tools, screwdrivers, corkscrews and darts. On Tuesday, September 26, TSA adjusted the ban on liquids, gels, and aerosols. You can bring liquids, gels, and aerosols only in three-ounce containers or smaller and in a one-quart, zip-top, plastic bag. Beverages and other items purchased in the secure boarding area may be brought onto the aircraft.

If you try to carry them in your cabin baggage or on your person, the airport screening services will remove them. The passenger will then have the option of abandoning the item, in which case the TSA then disposes of it, or the passenger can return to the counter and Air Tahiti Nui will then hold it for 7 days. The passenger must then contact us upon their return to collect it. They will not be forwarded to your destination or delivered to you. To avoid possible inconvenience, we suggest If you are carrying any such items, they must be packed in your checked baggage.

We will not be responsible for, nor have any liability in respect of, items removed from passengers or their baggage by airport security personnel acting in accordance with international or government regulations, whether or not any such items are subsequently retained or destroyed by such airport security personnel, or are passed by such airport security personnel to us.

All checked and unchecked items are subject to search.

Air Tahiti Nui reserves the right to refuse transportation to passengers without positive identification matching the name of the ticket.

Check your baggage as soon as possible. Do not accept any items from unknown persons for carriage on board the aircraft.

Do not leave your baggage unattended. It may be stolen or removed by the police and destroyed as a suspicious bag.

Federal regulations require that firearms in checked baggage must be unloaded and declared when baggage is presented for check-in.

Passengers carrying needles will need to declare them at the screening mile. Where possible documentation or identification to confirm their medical condition should be produced. Medication should have a professionally printed label identifying the medication or manufacturers name or pharmaceutical label affixed.

Dangerous articles in baggage: For safety reasons, dangerous articles, such as those listed below, must not be packed or carried in passenger baggage.

  • Compressed Gasses deeply refrigerated, flammable, and poisonous such as butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, scuba cylinders.

  • Corrosives such as acids, alkalis, mercury and wet-cell batteries.

  • Explosives such as ammunition, (except for sporting or hunting purposes) fireworks and flares.

  • Common Household Agents such as bleach, cooking oil, drain openers, detergents, cleaners, etc.

  • Flammable Liquids and Solids such as lighter fuel, matches, paints, thinners, and fire-lighters.

  • Briefcases and Attach Cases with installed alarm devices.
    Oxidizing Material such as peroxides.

  • POISONS AND INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCES such as insecticides, weed-killers, and live virus materials.

  • Medicines And Toiletries which are necessary or appropriate for the passenger's personal use on the trip - hair spray, perfumes and medicines, etc., containing alcohol are allowed in limited quantities.

Lost/Damaged Baggage
